Who is Feed My People?

History and Background

The charity was incorporated in 1966, and registered as a Charity in 1970 by a group of individuals who shared a common interest in relieving human suffering. Over the years, the Charity has sought to give a voice to the poor, and be an advocate to children and families in need worldwide. We are working in new ways through our Feed My People programme, harnessing modern methods of communication to mobilise greater public support for the needs of the poor, especially in Africa. Our Feed My People programme in Liberia has led the way in the conception and development of a bold new approach to saving lives and strengthening communities. Through the implementation of new reporting procedures, insight was gained into the needs, makeup, and desires of local communities. Through its pilot Christmas feeding project in and around Monrovia, Smile Too, a mechanism for effecting change in the community was discovered and is being developed. The HAPI (HIV/AIDS Prevention Initiative) was conceived to work together with local communities and governments to deal with a common issue devastating so many lives. Our best quality of working hand in hand with local communities continues to drive our efforts. It is our continuing goal to develop and improve each of our programmes.
In 2005 we were able to reintroduce the only government recognised school for the deaf in the country of Liberia, West Africa, and begin the rebuilding process of our schools in the capital of the war-torn and ravaged country. We will continue to reach out to the most vulnerable and needy children through our feeding, education, and medical programmes, regardless of race, culture, disability or religious background.

Accountability and Standards Compliance

Feed My People, the humanitarian arm of DSPMM Ltd. (registered Charity number 261347) is commited to comply with the standards set out by the Charity Commission and the International humanitarian community. To this end the Charity has adopted financial control, conflict of interest, information and transparency, and data protection policies. It has introduced web-based meetings to update and facilitate the oversight and management of the charity by the trustees. The trustees work with the Charity's solicitors and the Charity Commision to ensure its actions are appropriate and effective. The Charity is also seeking to adhere to, and implement, international humanitarian standards, for all activities overseas.

How Your Money is Spent

It's of paramount importance to us that we're the best possible stewards of the money you provide to help relieve suffering and making hunger history. The Charity is regulated by the Charity Commission, who regulate all of Britain's charities. A recent assessment by a chartered accountant on how donated funds are being used by Feed My People is available here.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to relieve human suffering through humanitarian aid programmes, and to establish, support and maintain charitable educational campaigns including, but not limited to, raising awareness of the plight of Third World countries, and providing worldwide relief and development to reduce human suffering as a result of hunger, poverty, disease, war, natural disasters and other circumstances creating human need.

Strategies

The medium to long-term strategy of Feed My People is to ensure wholeness of the child and to empower sustainable livelihoods in Africa, and the developing world, through the following approaches:

  • Capacity building of local staff employed in local NGOs overseas.
  • Provision of technical advice, support and training to empower local staff in partner offices overseas.
  • Provision of support for staff of local NGOs to engage in strategic partnerships with key relief and development stakeholders overseas.
  • Training in all aspects of the project cycle, in order to empower local staff to raise funds locally and to build their skills in project management, from the assessment of projects to the final evaluation at the end of every project.

Feed My People recognises the importance of identifying lessons learnt regularly, to inform future work.  Specifically, in all projects overseas, community-based techniques such as evaluations, writing of regular participatory reports, lesson learning, use of logical frameworks and measurement of impact are being introduced to help ensure the future success of Feed My People and to maximise the impact of the project work overseas.   Feed My People aims to ensure compliance to international standards (e.g. SPHERE standards) and aims to replicate good practice in the humanitarian industry, in all its projects.

Alongside donations received from the general public in UK and Europe and more generally via the World Wide Web, Feed My People is also working to acquire funding within Europe and Africa, from grant making agencies like the International Deaf Children’s Society, UN's World Food Programme and DFID.
Feed My People focuses its work on need and the improvement of the well-being of children, and is open to work with all people, regardless of race, religion, disability, faith or culture.

Smiling faces are some of the fruits of the Feed My People programmes in Monrovia, Liberia where 15 years of civil war had crushed the hopes and dreams of children, parents and grandparents alike. Thanks to your support, children like Temi will have a hope and a future.
