NAME OF PROJECT: Feed My People School Barnersville


DURATION OF PROJECT: Started in 2005.


SUMMARY OF THIS PROJECT: FMP renovated, and is supporting the running of, this elementary and junior high school in the Barnersville slum of Monrovia. Over 400 children attend this spacious school, with its friendly environment, and they receive classes and food 5 times a week, through the support provided by FMP.

KEY BENEFICIARIES OF PROJECT: 410 pupils between nursery and 6th grade, and the families of these school children. In the 2006/7 academic year, there were 207 children in nursery and kindergarten and 203 from 1st – 6th grade. GOAL OF PROJECT: To improve literacy rates amongst children in Barnersville.

KEY ACTIVITIES OF THIS PROJECT: Rehabilitation of the school building. Enrolment of 410 students in the academic year 2006/7. Recruitment of qualified teachers. Provision of on-going support to the running costs of the school. FUTURE PLANS ON THIS PROJECT: Move to a FMP-owned school building.

IMPACT OF PROJECT TO DATE: 410 children in Barnersville have easy access to education.

QUOTES FROM PEOPLE ON THE PROJECT: “I like this school, because the teachers are very good, the food is good and I like the way the teachers teach”. “I would like this school to increase up to 12th grade, so that we don’t have to move schools”. “I would like to have computers, a radio station, textbooks, basketball and volleyball at the school (Quotes from 6th grade pupils, May 2007) “FMP schools serve as a beacon of hope to thousands of parents and children in each of the communities in which the schools are located. With the holistic education being provided by FMP, it helps to reduce crime rate and the waywardness in these communities.” (FMP Programme Officer, December 2006).
