FEED MY PEOPLE (FMP) EDUCATION PROGRAMME:
Paynesville School, Paynesville, Monrovia, Liberia

NAME OF PROJECT: Paynesville School
DURATION OF FMP FUNDING: 2005 - 2008
SUMMARY OF THIS PROJECT: Between 2005 and 2008, this project enabled a new school to become operational in the Paynesville area of Monrovia, following the destruction of many schools in that area, during the war. With limited resources, the school offered the pupils nutritious food and lessons in all subjects, five days a week.
KEY BENEFICIARIES OF PROJECT: 108 students (from nursery to 6th grade), and their families
GOAL OF PROJECT: To improve literacy rates amongst children in Paynesville
KEY ACTIVITIES OF THIS PROJECT ALREADY CARRIED OUT: FMP assisted in renovating the school building. The school enrolled 108 students, in the academic year 2006/7. The school recruited qualified teachers.
IMPACT OF PROJECT TO DATE: Good relations between staff, teachers and pupils. 108 children in the Paynesville area of Monrovia had close access to school.
QUOTES FROM PEOPLE ON THE PROJECT: “I have taught in other schools, but I particularly like the approach of this school, because there is good cooperation between staff, there are good relationships and salaries are paid on time. There is a culture where the teachers are interested to know the minds of the students. Other schools don’t provide food, and all staff and students are fed daily at this school.” “It is good to teach here, because the Principal has regular meetings with staff and helps to produce lesson plans.” “The school could be improved by having electricity, concrete walls rather than mats to divide the classrooms, drinking water, a fence for security, sports facilities, a library and an adult education programme.” (Quotes from teachers, May 2007)
